Renaissance Public School Academy
Renaissance Public School Academy, a preschool - 8th grade school in Mount Pleasant, MI was looking for a way to manage the organic materials produced from their hoop house, chickens, and school meals. With lots of collaboration with students and staff, we landed on this setup that will allow for active composting, brown material storage, and finished compost curing/storage.

The system is modular, meaning the bins can be moved to a different location and/or have front walls set up on any of the bins. The front walls are split into 3 pieces and removable for easy accessibility.
Each bin holds 1 cubic yard of material. The bins are large enough for composted materials to retain heat and reach sufficient temperatures to destroy pathogens and weed seeds, yet small enough to easily be managed by students. Several bays allow for dialing in compost “recipes” that work for the materials they will be composting.

A wagon and several 5 gallon buckets were provided to collect and transport food scraps from school meals each day.

The 2026-2027 school year will bring several opportunities for students to learn all about composting and how it is a very real way to positively affect the world around them.

Thank you to the staff and students at Renaissance for collaborating on this project!
